Graphics

I finally finished my linocut! I think it turned out ok in the end, now I just need to buy some more frames and then they can be wrapped up as presents - I put an ancestor map on a transparent paper on top of the print, then it can be modified if necessary later without ruining the print it self.

Gift ideas

Most of us are trying to finish our Christmas shopping in these days, here are some ideas from last year that might be of some inspiration. The best gifts are the personal ones! DesignSponge

Multiple personalities

I was reading Penelope Trunk's blog which I find really interesting! She has among other things (Career, Management etc) written about 'how to blog', and is recommending that one always blog with your real name. I have chosen not to do that and I think it depends on if you are going for a professional career in the media or want to be famous for something or not.

For me it makes sense to separate my life into 'Creative me' (supposedly this blog) 'Family me' (private friends & family blog) 'Gardening me' (yet another blog;) and my 'Political/society/media me' at Twitter. Of course Facebook as well where I have my network of friends and acquaintances, and LinkedIn where my professional me is with that sort of network - I am not friends with my managers on Facebook but on LinkedIn.

Image from the web
I don't want my professional network necessarily know about my opinions about politics or religion that I can 'rant' about at Twitter and also not everything about what sort of pictures I take and so on. Of course if somebody really wants they can 'figure' me out and link the various pseudonyms. And some of my friends are both professional and private so they will know more about my different sides.

So for now this makes sense to me in my situation :) Have you googled yourself? Do you know what people find when they search for your name? Is it all good? When I was hiring for my team I used to google the candidates and it did affect my opinion of them when I found certain pictures of them online for instance.

Snow!

The first snow came today! And we even have some sun - I was running outside to take some pictures, just managed to put on some clothes as the light doesn't stay long, and by the time I got out the sun was gone of course - but at least I got some proof that it was snow today :)

Plans for the future

I have had a lot of time to read and think at the moment since I am at home with my little girl. Several hours each night in a quiet house while feeding and waiting for my girl to fall asleep. I enjoy reading blogs, news and following debates on twitter, lately I've been reading a lot about women and politics at work, sparked by the "cupcake is the end of feminism" discussion as mentioned previously.

I have found lots of interesting articles in Forbes women, Financial Times and The Economist. They all seem to agree that it is important that women are given the opportunity to succeed professionally at the same time as we can be mothers, the only way this has been successful has been in the countries where some reforms have been put in place with quotas to get women into boards as well as paid maternity and parental leave. Then we get women who can work full time and also wants/are able to have children. It is the society’s responsibility to make sure we can have the opportunity to have children; we need to sustain the birthrate and keep on building a welfare state with thriving businesses. I read in one of the articles that the best teams are made up of different skills and backgrounds which bring spark and innovations to organizations. So both making sure women are part of the decision making as well as a diverse workforce when it comes to culture and background is key.
Female leaders tend to be good at communication, empathy, vision, perspective and maturity and these are elements of how modern leaders - both men and women should focus on.

One last thing that I noted as nice to remember as a woman who wants to have a successful career are these key elements: one should have a 'stretch assignment' to gain visibility and attract mentors, should get international assignments, have people managing responsibilities, work in different environments/functions, have operational experience, be an innovator/introduce new products or services, turn around failing businesses, be planning and driving change and finally take place at the decision making table.

I have gone a bit away from design and photo/crafts now but this falls under things that inspire me! :) I am glad I am not completely uninterested in the world around me even if I am a fresh mom to be honest, was afraid I would be in a fog for several months.

So now - what are my plans for the future? Last night I was writing down a few things I want to do now, I have been a bit worrying about becoming a boring housewife with no direction or purpose in my life. But I am going to use this opportunity when I am home with my girl for at least a year to develop myself. I might stay home 2 years it looks like now because my husband has gotten an opportunity at work abroad and if I take unpaid leave for one year after my maternity leave I can come back to my old job.
So my plan for the next 2 years is this:

Spring 2012:
  •  Start taking French lessons once a week (I had German in school which I have hardly used, French would be so much more useful both at work and in private life)
  • Learn about Sociology (wanted to study this but never got round to it, will buy books anyway and read on my own!)
  • Focus on Art & Culture (be creative, write, attend events etc)

Autumn 2012:
  •  Start on an MBA! (will do it online through a good international University, will try to get work to sponsor part of the bill..)
  • Attend mom and baby courses like swimming and yoga etc
  • Explore new home country in weekends and vacations; get as much as possible from the experience.

So - now I have written my objectives down, they are SMART I think? Let me check - Specific: yes, Measurable: yes, Achievable: yes, Realistic: yes and Time bound: yes! And now that I have also made it sort of public I have to follow through :)

Other than thinking about work and personal goals I have actually managed get some progress on my projects at home today, I have printed Ancestor chart/Family tree on transparent paper for my whole family - including my little girl, amazing to see that now I am part of the chain of marriage and children, doesn’t feel so long ago since I was a single girl on my own in the world.

I have also copied pictures of myself and my husband when we were small to put into the little ones 'First year' book. I will also try to start wrapping Christmas presents. However our dog seems to disagree with staying inside all day and is really ready for a walk! The weather is not good though, we have been having storms and heavy rain, might hurry out for a short walk at least to get some air.

Waiting for Christmas

On Sunday it was the first of the 4 Sundays left before Christmas and as tradition goes we light the first candle and put up the star and the lights in the window. It is really lovely to look at these lights in the dark nights we have now.

Linocut

I am finally finishing my linocut project, I have planned to make christmas gifts of it, will make a family tree print and give to my sister and brother. Have not decided yet if I will print the family tree on the print it self of make it a transparent sheet on top. I will also make Bookplates as I mentioned here previously - has just taken a bit of time, ahem - almost been a year now.. I had a plan to do lots of creative projects this year but has not gotten very far - hopefully I'll finish these things before Christmas at least.

Speaking of Christmas, just did some shopping and have sorted out a few of the gifts already. Even for my husband and my sister which is normally the most difficult ones! Since this will be the first Christmas as a family of three (!) I have bought Christmas stockings that I will decorate from Panduro with gingerbread figures, and I have small paper-bags that me and my husband fill with a little something for each other and we open every second day. I do love the pre-Christmas time! Have planned for a get together with some of my friends where we will make cookies and and drink mulled wine.

I am really glad we have the Christmas to look forward to in these dark winter times, now we are having a storm outside and I hope the large trees outside our house still will be there tomorrow..

Kelly Moore

I had to show you my brilliant bag from Kelly Moore that I got to store both baby stuff as well as camera & laptop gear! Brilliant I must say :) I was looking for a nicer bag a while ago when I was doing lots of business trips but didn't find any that really fulfilled my need, but this one does! So I can totally justify the price;)

Talking about combining things, in this case a bag that can be used in my job as well as as a mother - today I've been reading some very interesting articles about the trend currently with all these blogs about cupcakes and interior and how that apparantly is working against feminism and gender equality - we are supposedly going back to the 50's just because we appreciate making a nice home for our family and baking now and then. You can read about it (in Norwegian) first here and it has been commented here and here - very interesting read.

I do believe we should be able to do both - to be a career women and enjoy traditionally female activities, we are not men and should not try to be - why would we? We should use our strenghts as women in working life and together with men that creates a sucessful recipe - the same way that diversity with different cultures are creating successful businesses. Feminism is not trying to be men - I believe that freedom of choice to do the things we enjoy the most is what we have gained these days. In the 50's women did not have the same possibilites as we have today, now that we have a choice we can choose to stay at home with the kids if that is what we want - but we dont have to. I guess many women today try to achieve the right balance between work and home, having a perfect house and a good career is the goal. Of course this can lead to the 'good girl' syndrome of exhaustion but we need to be realistic and smart about it -and I think most women are! Nobody's perfect and bloglife is just a part of who we are:)

There have also been a lot of discussion about breastfeeding in the media lately - Audun Lysbakken has sparked a lot of heated discussion, can read more about him here. The discussion tend to get lost in is breastfeeding good or bad which is not his point, and people think that he wants to remove the woman's "right" to be at home as long as possibly with the baby, for those who are not aware we have very generous maternity leave in Norway, can stay home one year with 80% pay or 10 months with 100% pay!
He believes in equality and that women should not suffer in their career when becoming mothers, and that women should be able to go back earlier to work without beeing stigmatised, freedom of choice for the families. As well as the very justafiable right of the fathers  to spend more time with the baby the first year. I havent read his book "Frihet, likhet, farskap" yet - but have bought it for my husband for his first Fathers day! I will read it after he finishes. So a blogpost that goes from shopping to career & feminism to motherhood - thats me ;)

Footprints

Looks like I started making gingerbread right? But no, last night my dad called, he had a request for a Christmas present, so today I just had to get to it! Back home at my parents place they have some stuff that us kids made in the kindergarden when we were small, it is handprints in cement, so now he wanted that of his grandchild as well :)
So what I did was make a dough of 2 cups of flour, 1 cup of salt and 1 cup of water and a little oil. This makes something called 'Trolldeig' in Norwegian, it was very popular in the 80's! We used to make all kinds of little figures out of this dough and they last 'forever'.

So I wanted to make hand and foot print of our little daughter, she is 6 weeks now and want to capture how small she is! The hand print did not really work out as her little hand just didn't want to be outstretched, so I ended up with both her tiny feet instead, and think it worked out quite well!

I had to use the rest of the dough for something as well so thought I'd make decorations that can be used for the Christmas tree - will decorate with white paint and hang them in nice string. I used some food coloring to get the right ginger bread colour.

I also made some prints with purple paint on paper to use in the book that I keep to remember all the things for the first year of her life. So - have been a bit creative today! Thanks to a relative good nights sleep - they don't come so often at the moment ;)

New projects

Image from the thepatacakebaby

Looking for projects where I can use lots of retro fabrics I got from my husbands parents, and have 2 ideas now, it shouldnt be too complicated as I am not experienced with the sewing machine!

This kind of bib looks very nice and I have now learned that it is very useful to avoid having to change clothes several times a day.. :)

Another thing that I have been planning to make is Owl pillows/toys, are looking for inspiration online, these look quite straight forward so I migh manage this :)

Or these ones - very cute!

Lovely gifts

Look what I just got! I really like the jewellery from this brand Snö of Sweden, and for my birthday this week I got this bracelet from some friends of mine, I also got lovely flowers and stuff for our baby.
My husband has been on a worktrip to Paris, this time we couldn't go together of course but he mostly spent the time in the office anyway. He brought me these gorgeous Macaroons! I love.
Happy days

Arts & Crafts

I started knitting a couple of days ago, I was just inside one shop looking for a crochet needle for myAmigurumi project and here is a bit of explanation on what Amigurumi is:

(Amigurumi (編みぐるみ, lit. knitted stuffed toy) is the Japanese art of knitting or crocheting small stuffed animals and anthropomorphic creatures. The word is derived from a combination of the Japanese words ami, meaning crocheted or knitted, and nuigurumi, meaning stuffed doll.[1] Amigurumi are typically animals, but can include artistic renderings or inanimate objects endowed with anthropomorphic features)

So I got the needle but also saw a lovely scarf/collar that looked quite easy to make so I decided to start on that one instead :) It is basically straigt forward and done by what is called Perlestrikk in Norwegian (googled and found it's called moss-stitch in English) and it is not more complicated than 1 right and 1 wrong and switch on the next round. My kind of project - easy and will look good when it is done and actually something that I will wear!

Here are some other nice ones for inspiration

Finland!

Just been a trip to Finland - and of course had to bring back some more Finnish Design!

As I already have Unikko mugs, Maribowl (6-8 now?), Mumin teaspoons so this time I went for oven mitts! :)

I like this new design! So it inspired me to change the other things in my kitchen for a more graphic black and white theme. So away with bits and bobs for a cleaner look complete with this lovely pot stand on the kitchen table I thought the result was quite ok!

So if you are up for some nice scandinavian design here are a few links:

Boxes and Denmark

Why are the Danes so good with colorful boxes? Two of the nicest sites that sell boxes are danish, first one that probably most know about is House Doctor, I just love their whole catalogue, they don't sell directly from the web but through different dealers, I tried to find some of their more colorful stuff in our nearest 'shabby chic' shop but they wouldnt take it in.

Just look at these pictures!

Another one is Rie Elise Larsen, the boxes below, same style and beautiful!

Finally some inspiration from a lovely fabric shop called Stoff & Stil, I was planning to buy lots of fabric and make colorful pillows for our sofa, just havent really managed to get that far yet. Strange that. I have designated a room for the sewing machine and everything is ready for me to get started. I have only managed to make some curtains yet (in the easiest possible way). Oh - and I when I saw the picture with the deck chairs I remembered that I actually did that! I painted the old ones inherited from my grandma white and stapled on a red and white striped fabric! At least one of them is comfortable;)

Pukka

I had so much fun setting up my new blog but I'll finish for today with a nice cup of Pukka tea, lovely package and lovely tea! I spent the whole evening finding inspiring blogs that I wanted to have as my favourites - some old some new that I just found. It is easier to check for updates when I have them on the side of my blog. I'm not sure if I will write the blog in norwegian or english, probably a bit of both! :)

Inspired

I <3 Stina Persson sine bilder!

01-01-2011

....

The first day of a new year! A blank canvas to be filled with whatever one wants - this is why I am creating a new blog. I like beeing organized and structured (up to a certain point..) My real life and my online life are separated in different shelfs after type and areas. Some will only meet the professional me (xls and processes) others the different side that get's excited by great design and beatiful things. This blog will be for the 'visual and what inspire me' side of me.
